Ophthalmic Imaging Technician- SouthPark

Visual Imaging Department - Charlotte, NC - Full Time

Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians perform an array of visual imaging and diagnostic testing, including but not limited to Visual Field Testing, Keratometry, Fundus Photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Manual and Automated Lensometry, Angiography, and other advanced ocular testing. 

This position will serve patients primarily in our SouthPark office, but as a member of our Visual Imaging department, you will be required to travel to other offices as business needs arise.

Primary Objective

The Ophthalmic Imaging Technician provides clinical support to Providers through the delivery of high quality, compassionate visual imaging and diagnostic services to CEENTA’s patients. 

Essential Job Functions

The essential functions for the position include:

  • Explain visual imaging procedures to patient and their families
  • Perform visual imaging and diagnostic testing, including but not limited to Visual Field Testing, Keratometry, Fundus Photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Manual and Automated Lensometry, Angiography, and other advanced testing 
  • Document the results of imaging procedures in the EHR system for provider review
  • Manage visual imaging resource schedules in the EHR system, which includes scheduling patients for visual imaging study appointments
  • Maintain applicable work queues in the EHR system 
  • Index lab reports, procedure and office notes, and outside documentation pertinent to patient care from the document management system to the EHR system
  • Perform clinical room turnover/set-up and equipment sterilization
  • Maintain OSHA standards to ensure a sterilized and safe environment
  • Maintain stock of office and clinical supplies and order from appropriate vendor when needed
  • The ability to work on-site 
  • Predictable, reliable and prompt attendance

The Ophthalmic Imaging Technician directly impacts CEENTA’s ability to achieve its mission as they play an integral role in patient care delivery, providing high quality, compassionate visual imaging and diagnostic services to CEENTA’s patients. 

Supervision

This position reports to the Manager of Imaging and Radiology Services. 

Work Environment

This position functions in a multi-specialty clinic with high patient volume. This role may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, and therefore, may be required to wear personal protective equipment at times. This position routinely uses standard medical office equipment as well as standard medical diagnostic equipment. Physical Demands:

  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit in front of a computer; type; perform repetitive mouse clicks; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or providers/staff
  • Occasionally assists with moving or positioning wheel-chair bound patients, clinical equipment, and office supplies up to 300 pounds

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position with core hours Mondays-Fridays, 8:00am –5:00pm. Hours are subject to variation based upon clinic needs. 

Travel

Travel to various CEENTA locations required dependent upon business need.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Graduate of an International Council of Accreditation (ICA) accredited clinical training program OR completion of an International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) or American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) independent study course preferred. 

Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification from the IJCAHPO and/or Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA) or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT-C) certification from the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society (OPS) Board of Certification (BOC) preferred. 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Ability to obtain and maintain BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required. 

One to three years’ experience in ophthalmic imaging or other related experience preferred.

A typical day for the Ophthalmic Imaging Technician involves collaborating with Providers to deliver high quality, compassionate visual imaging and diagnostic services to CEENTA’s patients. The Ophthalmic Imaging Technician greets patients with a warm, welcoming smile as they escort them to the testing area. They perform an array of visual imaging and diagnostic testing, including but not limited to Visual Field Testing, Keratometry, Fundus Photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Manual and Automated Lensometry, Angiography, and other advanced testing. They also perform various administrative duties, which include clinical room turnover/set-up, equipment sterilization, scheduling appointments, indexing faxes and other documents, and monitoring workqueues in the EHR system.
